How many business days are in a month?

Most months have between 20 and 23 weekdays before holidays. The counted business-day total depends on the month length, where weekends fall, and whether a holiday is observed on a weekday.

Why the count changes

A 31-day month does not always have more business days than a 30-day month. The weekday distribution matters more than the raw length. A month that starts and ends around weekends can lose several calendar dates before holiday exclusions are even considered.

Federal holidays can reduce the monthly count when they fall on weekdays. For example, a month with 22 weekdays and one listed federal holiday on a Friday would have 21 counted business days under a federal-holiday exclusion rule.

Common planning uses

Monthly business-day counts help with revenue pacing, invoice follow-up windows, staffing coverage, workday-based service levels, and project estimates. They are also useful when comparing two months that have the same calendar length but a different number of workable weekdays.

Document the holiday rule

If you share a monthly count with a team, state whether it is a weekday-only count or a business-day count with holiday exclusions. That small note prevents mismatches between accounting, payroll, and project tracking spreadsheets.
